Paralympic sport, in need of big stars?
Since the South African phenomenon Oscar Pistorius, who
shocked the world before being convicted of the murder of his wife, the
Paralympic Games have struggled to find internationally known personalities
capable of putting a face to an event whose visibility remains limited.
The conviction for killing his partner, Reeva Steenkamp, in
early 2013 ended his career and caused him to fall from his pedestal.
Since then, no Paralympic athlete has achieved a level of
fame similar to that of the South African sprinter, although some would have a
status that could be considered "star".
He himself cites other names that he considers to have a
media impact such as Bebe Vio ("an Italian fencer who has a million
subscribers on social networks") or Matt Stutzman ("an American boy
who does archery with his feet and who is ultra-well-known Worldwide").
For more and more Paralympic athletes to be known or even to
bring their fame closer to that of Olympic athletes, Magali Tezenas believes
that there must be structural changes.
